Recommendations for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Keep Warm
    • It is absolutely essential that you keep your body warm. From a Chinese medicine perspective, cold has a constrictive nature. We want to ensure the smooth flow of blood, energy and micronutrients to the uterus to facilitate implantation and proper development of the fetus. Wear socks. No belly shirts. No cold icy drinks or foods.
  • Reduce Stress
    • Physical, physiological and emotional stress should be minimized.
  • Dietary Restrictions
    • Eat whatever you crave subject to the following restrictions:
      • Minimize excessively spicy foods. These have dispersing qualities so we want to avoid this type of energetic in the lower abdomen.
      • Completely avoid MSG (most Asian foods, most soy sauce, Campbells soup, chicken bouillon, and many other places you wouldn't expect it. check labels). It is neurotoxic.
      • Completely avoid artificial sweeteners such as Nutrasweet (Aspartame). It is also toxic to the nervous system.
        • If you have to have something sweet, eat something that is naturally sweet like a piece of fruit or even using small amounts of sugar in moderation is ok if you don't have a history of blood sugar issues.
        • Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup.
        • We do not recommend eating a lot of sweets as insulin swings can be very harmful to a developing fetus. If you crave a lot of sweets, please let us know.
      • Completely avoid raw eggs, raw or undercooked meat and seafood of any kind (cooked or raw). This includes sushi, Caesar salads, hollandaise sauce, etc.
      • Completely avoid soft, unpasteurized or uncooked cheeses. These include: Feta, Brie, Camembert, blue, ricotta and Mexican cheeses.
      • Completely avoid alcohol. Even small amounts cause cause childhood abnormalities.
      • Minimize caffeine (coffee and tea). Herbal Teas are ok, Teeccino seems to be a popular substitute.
      • Do not microwave your food.
  • Completely avoid Smoking (even second hand).
  • Avoid Cats
  • Homemade soups are easy and very nutritious
    • Slow cooking is best and easy with a crock pot.
    • For faster cooking, you can use a non-aluminum pressure cookers (one brand we are familiar with that has stainless steel pressure cookers is T-Fal).
