Air Purifiers
Many patients ask us about air purifiers. We have looked into this issue and our bottom line opinion is that ozone generating machines (such as "Living Air"), and ion generating machines (such as Sharper Image's "ionic breeze") may be hazardous to your health.
The type of air cleaner you choose should depend on the type of air pollution you have. For dust particles we recommend a HEPA filter. If dust is your main problem, you can pick up a relatively cheap HEPA filter at Costco or some place that has a return policy in case it doesn't do the job.
If you live near a freeway, golf course, farm, etc. or if you have new furniture, carpets, paint, etc., a HEPA filter won't do much. You need special filters that will absorb these gasses. We recommend the IQ Air filters. These are expensive, but they work. In general we find the multigas units to be high quality and to work for most types of common household gasses. If you have particular needs, you can contact them directly or contact our office and one of our administrative staff can find out for you. The manufacturer does not allow discounts on the units, but we can order them for you and that way you don't get charged shipping fees (usually $50). There is also a 90 day return policy. You can read about their filters here.
For less intense fumes, we recommend you get some air purifying plants.
